The collective of Japanese specialist technologists known as teamLab present Ultra Subjective Space, their first US show of video works at Pace Gallery New York. The application of leading-edge digital modeling and animation to material of, often traditional, Japanese aesthetic rarefication produces quite beguiling results. Indeed the indicators we expect to signal the presence of form-warping digital computation are all but missing in this work producing an entirely new set of expectations and inviting new ways of viewing once familiar forms and patterns. The relatively gentle moments and transitions in these pieces belie a deeper, more unsettling sense of total transformation, of loosing hold and of drowning in dangerous beauty.
